Viennese cuisine
Unsurpassed in its variety and influenced by the former countries of the Habsburg monarchy – the Viennese cuisine. Viennese cuisine is known for Wiener Schnitzel and pastries, but includes a wide range of other dishes.
Wiener Schnitzel (veal coated in breadcrumbs and fried), Tafelspitz (boiled beef), Beuschel (a ragout containing veal lungs and heart), and Selchfleisch (smoked meat) with sauerkraut and dumplings are typical of its cooking. Sweet Viennese dishes include Apfelstrudel (strudel pastry filled with apples), Milchrahmstrudel (milk-cream strudel), Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancakes served with fruit compotes), and Sachertorte (cake of two layers of chocolate cake with apricot jam in the middle). Viennese wine and Heuriger and Viennese beer
Wine growing has a long tradition in Vienna. Nowadays, the city presents itself with a lively wine scene. A genuine Viennese Heuriger, or wine tavern, which only serves wine from its own vineyards, can be recognized by the pine bushes and a sign with the word “Ausg’steckt”, which also indicates when the tavern is open. The variety of Viennese Heuriger venues ranges from traditional wine taverns to taverns located in the vineyard itself.
However, Viennese also like to drink beer – preferably their own Ottakringer, brewed in the middle of Vienna.
Bars and clubs
Vienna’s club scene is all about parties with music of the highest quality. The parties range from chic to underground. There are also bars for all tastes. You look for a class of wine after a conference day? Just look for the next coffeeshop/ bar around and get one!
Vienna has some rooftop bars as well, these are open and accessible to everone. The closest ones to the venue are “Libelle” in MuseumsQuartier and “Dachboden” on top of the 25hours hotel.
