Excursions

On Saturday, 4 April 2026 two one-day excursions are offered!

Stone Age Excursion: Heldenberg, Stone Age village and circular ditches

In this excursion we will visit a re-build Neolithic village. The area surrounding Heldenberg was settled as far back as the Early Stone Age. This is proven by the archeological finds that also made the reconstruction of the Neolithic village possible. For an exhibition in 2005 a full-size ring ditch and a settlement section with four buildings was reconstructed. The construction of these architectural models on a scale of 1: 1 on the Heldenberg was done in part with replica tools made of stone, bone and wood. This provided the opportunity for scientific experiments on the subject of wood processing in the Stone Age in terms of experimental archeology (https://vias.univie.ac.at/en/research/experimental-archaeology/projects/heldenberg/)

Focus of this excursion: Stone Age, experimental archeology, restoration

Roman Vienna Excursion: Carnuntum, Roman city

From the 1st to the 4th century AD, Carnuntum was a significant Roman metropolis on the border of the Roman Empire. Carnuntum became the capital of the province of Pannonia Superior with about 50,000 inhabitants because of its militarily vital location for securing the border and its proximity to key trade routes. Parts of the Roman city quarter have been reconstructed. (https://www.carnuntum.at/en)

We plan to visit the reconstructed area of Carnuntum, amphitheatre, the Heathen’s Gate and the local Museum.

Focus of this excursion: Roman city, prospection, reconstruction and preservation
